As far as Reno events are concerned, this is not fake news! Sharyl Attkisson returns to Reno to speak at TEDxUniversityofNevada 2018. Sharyl Attkisson is a five-time Emmy Award winner and recipient of the Edward R. Murrow award for investigative reporting. Sharyl first spoke for TEDxUniversityofNevada in 2015 and the video we posted of her talk entitled “Astroturf and manipulation of media messages” has almost 900,000 views online at TEDx Talks.
Sharyl’s talk for us in January 2018 will be from her new book about fake news. In her talk, Sharyl will discuss the origin of the term fake news, the contemporary history of fake news, and will give examples of how both political parties disseminated it in recent years. Sharyl’s talk will remind us how to recognize and guard against sources that want to manipulate what we think.
Sharyl Attkisson’s first book, Stonewalled, was published in 2015. From the back cover of her book, “Stonewalled is the story of the Obama administration’s efforts to monitor journalists, intimidate and harass opposition groups, and spy on private citizens. But it is also a searing indictment of the timidity of the press and the dangerous decline of investigative journalism and unbiased truth telling in America today.”
We will open doors to the event at 8 am, Saturday, January 27, 2018. It’s general admission seating, so if you want a front row seat make sure to arrive early. The first session starts at 9:00 am and features six speakers, including Sharyl Attkisson. That session will also feature two talks on campus free speech and a talk by Cara Brookins from her book about how she and her four children learned how to build their house by watching YouTube videos. The first session closes with a performance by newcomer Troi Irons.
We have a 20-minute break following the first session and you will be able to purchase Sharyl’s book. The Smear in our bookstore area. Sharyl will be around all day to sign your copy of her book and to discuss the ideas she shared in her talk. You will have additional opportunities to meet Sharyl and our other TEDx speakers and performers during our lunch break and the after party immediately following the final speaker of the afternoon.
The general admission ticket price is $100 and includes all speakers and performers as well as lunch and a morning break. Purchase 8 or more tickets at one time and you will receive our group discount rate of $90 per ticket. Students can purchase tickets for $30 by visiting the Wolf Shop on the University of Nevada campus or by emailing Bret Simmons at email@example.com.
